  • Erin Holt [00:00:02]:

I'm Erin Holt, and this is the Funk'tional Nutrition Podcast, where we lean into intuitive functional medicine. We look at how diet, our environment, our emotions, and our beliefs all affect our physical health. This podcast is your full bodied, well rounded resource. I've got over a decade of clinical experience, and because of that, I've got a major bone to pick with diet culture and the conventional healthcare model, they're both failing so many of us. But functional medicine isn't the panacea that it's made out to be either. We've got some work to do, and that's why creating a new model is my life's work. I believe in the ripple effect, so I founded the Funk'tional Nutrition Academy, a school and mentorship for practitioners who want to do the same.

    Erin Holt [00:00:45]:

This show is for you if you're looking for new ways of thinking about your health and you're ready to be an active participant in your own healing. You'll get things here that you won't get other places. Please keep in mind this podcast is created for educational purposes only and should never be used as a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment. I would love for you to follow the show, rate, review and share, because you never know whose life you might change and, of course, keep coming back for more. Now give me the mic so I can take it away. Welcome to the new Get Lifted Thursdays. That's where you get to ask me anything for my unfiltered hot take. The intention of these little quickie episodes is to activate you into your power.

    Erin Holt [00:01:28]:

Consider it kind of like a pep talk. Sometimes with a little tough love sprinkled into the mix. We get to talk about intuitive functional medicine, health, consciousness, mindset, manifesting, energy, medicine, business, wealth, building boundaries, relationships. It's all fair game here. Health isn't just found in broccoli, in biohacking, so this is the place to come when you want to expand beyond. For now, we're collecting questions on Instagram, so be on the lookout in my stories for question submissions there over at the Funktional, spelled with a K nutritionist, it is super important for me that my work gets to feel fun and exciting and inspiring and expansive. So Get Lifted Thursdays is one of the ways for me to do that. It's feeling pretty fun.

    Erin Holt [00:02:14]:

And today we're actually going to tuck into a question from Lisa Day that was submitted on Instagram. She asked, what is your number one piece of business advice? So, kind of hard to boil it down to just one answer, but I figured out how to do it. And the cool thing about this is that, yes, it really is my number one piece of business advice. But it also applies to just life in general. It transcends just business. So if you are a business owner, listen in. But even if you're not, this is going to be good stuff for you. This is a transformative practice.

    Erin Holt [00:02:46]:

What I'm going to talk about and I have worked with a lot of business owners, aspiring business owners and practitioners and one thing that I am pretty good at and I'm laughing because I'm giving myself a pat on the back but I'm pretty good at laughing. I mean, I'm good at laughing actually, but I'm also really good at pattern assessment. I've known this about myself for a long time. But the reason that it's funny is because just yesterday on a podcast I heard genius is pattern recognition. And I'm like have I just been like unknowingly calling myself a genius this whole time? How embarrassing. But anyway, I am good at assessing patterns and one of the patterns that I've recognized is that there are people who are successful and I don't just mean financial success, that can be one aspect of success. But when I'm talking about success, I'm talking about those who actualize their dreams, who actualize their hopes, their desires and their goals for themselves. Their dreams aren't things that just stay in their head.

    Erin Holt [00:03:53]:

They are embodied and they're lived out. There's a pattern here and it's a different pattern than those who just kind of stay feeling stuck. And I think it boils down to one chief difference and that is moving from being in effect into being in cause. So what the hell does that mean? That's what I'm going to talk about. I saw an Instagram post from Dr. Tara Swart and she and I was like, oh, this is like pretty much exactly what I'm trying to encapsulate and describe. But it was two columns and on the left hand side was the ego self and on the right hand side was the higher self. And she had sort of hallmarks of each. And what I realized, what I was trying to describe is that those who are successful in business and just like in life have an ability to move from the left hand side of the column over to the right hand side of the column.

    Erin Holt [00:04:56]:

So what she would refer to as moving from the ego self into moving into the higher self. I would say moving from effect into cause. And so on the left hand side it was lack and scarcity mindset, victim mentality, hiding your true self out of fear, seeing failure and complaining. On the right hand side the higher self, or we could say being in cause, is an abundance mindset, accountability, taking action, living in authenticity, seeing lessons instead of the failures, feeling gratitude instead of complaining. So the advice is to operate from this right hand side column, this cause side of the equation more often than not. That's it. So let's drill into this effect and cause.

    Erin Holt [00:05:53]:

You are living in effect when you are living in effect of everything that is around you. You are the way you are. This is the story, this is the narrative you tell yourself: I am the way I am because of this, because of XYZ or something is happening to me because of XYZ, because of something else. Everything that happens to me is in effect from something someone else did. Things are happening to me. We have a tendency to blame others for the situation that we are in. And when we are in effect, we have to ask ourselves who's in charge of your life? Because guess what? It's not you. It's the storyline of somebody did something to me or something happened, some external event happened and that's why I'm here.

    Erin Holt [00:06:46]:

And that thought, that narrative, looking at the world through that lens can absolutely keep us stuck. And that's because living in effects or living in effect puts the locus of control outside of ourselves. So the ability to change is outside of ourself when we are living in effect. I'm going to say that again, the ability to change is outside of ourself. So this makes change feel harder or even impossible. And that's why we feel like we're stuck where we are and that's why it becomes harder to actualize our hopes, dreams and goals, whether that's in business or just in life in general. Now, on the other side of the equation is cause. When you are in cause, you are in charge of how you experience all the events that happen in your life. And notice that I'm not saying you are in charge of all the events that happen in your life or you're responsible for everything that happens to you.

    Erin Holt [00:07:49]:

That's not what I said. What I'm saying is you are in charge of how you experience all of the events that happen in your life. I am in charge to change my own life. I am responsible for my experience in responsibility is just the ability to respond. Break up the word into two pieces. Response ability. I have the ability to respond. I am able.

    Erin Holt [00:08:21]:

I have agency, I have choice. I get to decide. This is true empowerment. So when we move from being in effect into being in cause, we know that the decisions we make every single day actually matter. They can actually change things. We become conscious participants in our life. Instead of life happening to us, we can move forward with a sense of purpose and mission. You get to decide what you get out of each and every situation that you are in.

    Erin Holt [00:08:55]:

And so you're not putting the responsibility on somebody else, you're putting the responsibility on yourself to mine for the gems, to look for the good, to look for the opportunities of gratitude instead of the opportunities for complaints. You see the lessons instead of the failures.

    Erin Holt [00:10:00]:

I'm going to give you a real world example. In the Funk'tional Nutrition Academy, where I train and mentor practitioners, we had a master class.

    Erin Holt [00:10:45]:

So every single month we hire industry experts to come and come and teach our students. And they're usually pretty awesome because I cherry pick, I hand select every single person, and we had a class that was, I will say disappointing. I will use that term. I was not expecting what we got. I was disappointing. It was underwhelming, right? And I spoke into that for the students and what I saw, because I'm like, I don't want to just fake the funk and be like, this was great, wasn't it? Wasn't this great? And what I saw out of the students was really a wonderful response. Collectively, they came together and was like, yeah, that was a little underwhelming. I had hoped for more, and here's what I got out of it.

    Erin Holt [00:11:43]:

Here's what I got out of it. Collectively, we were able to mine for the gems. And because we did that, those who chose to do that got a lot out of that class. This is a masterful skill. I don't want you to overlook this. If you have the tendency or the propensity to do this, really recognize in yourself what a masterful skill that is, and that skill can be transferable. If you can do that in one area of your life, you can do it in other places. Another example that I will use to drive home this had in FNA, the Funk'tional Nutrition Academy.

    Erin Holt [00:12:21]:

We had a podcast pitch challenge, and I did this because we get so many pitches for this podcast, and we say no to like, 99.99% of them because they're written so poorly. There's no personal touch. It's like a copy and paste job. It's just not good. I rely on personal relationship building in terms of who I invite on this show for the most part, but pitching to media is a real skill set, and it's a worthy endeavor to hone that, because if your goal is to grow your business, is to expand, then you want to get really good about building relationships and writing pitches that land with people. So we have this challenge, and at the end, I choose one of our FNA students to come on to the podcast.

    Erin Holt [00:13:12]:

So it's really fun, but it's a challenge, so not every single person who enters gets to win the nature of a challenge. We have a student, Darcy, and I have to shout Darcy out because she wrote an email, and she said this was a great experience for me to push myself to pitch for the podcast. It really launched me into some new growth with my business. It also gave me the courage to pitch to another podcast, which I just found out today that I was invited to be on. So Darcy didn't technically win the challenge, and she could have said, I didn't get chosen. What a waste of my time. And that would be Darcy operating in effect. And by operating in effect, her success would have been predicated on someone else, and that creates instability in our businesses and also elsewhere.

    Erin Holt [00:14:04]:

When we outsource our responsibility, it is our responsibility how we approach every situation and what we get out of every situation. So Darcy said, hey, I'm going for it. I'm doing this challenge, and I'm going to make this experience mean something. I'm going to get the most out of this situation. I'm going to use this as a way to stretch beyond my comfort zone. And because I'm writing it for one person, I might as well send it out to some other people. Darcy was so in cause, and her attitude just really exemplifies this so well. I think the ability and the willingness willingness to to look at every situation, even the challenging ones, maybe even especially the challenging ones, and to say, how is this happening for me? What can I learn from this? It's such an underappreciated skill set.

    Erin Holt [00:14:59]:

But without this without this skill, entrepreneurship or business ownership, it's going to feel unnecessarily hard. It's going to feel hard mentally. It's going to feel hard emotionally, might even feel a little hard physically. And this is what keeps people stuck. This is what keeps people from saying, it's too hard. I can't keep it up. I can't do this. And then they perpetuate that being in effect.

    Erin Holt [00:15:22]:

This is all happening to me. This is all happening to me. Now, I will absolutely admit and acknowledge that this might not come naturally for some of us, probably a lot of us, to operate in cause. And so I just want to speak into the fact that this is a practice. This is something that we have to practice on an ongoing basis and process on an ongoing basis, sometimes daily. So a real quick tip for you. Anytime you're feeling in a sticky, stuck situation or something that's kind of like, challenging or funky, ask yourself. Pause for a minute, do a little Zach Morris timeout, pause yourself for a minute and say, am I operating in effect or am I operating in cause? And if the answer is effect, what can you do to shift the lens, to shift your perspective just a little bit, to say, where can I take accountability and ownership? What choice do I have? How can I decide to look at this in a different way? That is my number one piece of business advice right there.

    Erin Holt [00:16:24]:

And this is why we do so much of this in FNA. People joke. They're like, I came to learn about lab testing and then I stayed for the personal transformation. That's why you'll hear students and grads say, this is not just the best professional investment they've ever made, but the best personal growth investment they've ever made. Lauren just said that on Tuesday. By the way, we are currently open for enrollment. If you're a practitioner learning to learn intuitive functional medicine modalities, I got you. I would love to have you in our next cohort.

    Erin Holt [00:16:53]:

We start October 1, but I hope that this inspires some people to shift their perspective just a little bit. Again, my number one piece of business advice, really, I think it boils down to this. So let me know how you liked this little quick and dirty. Every Thursday, come back for more. They're going to be quick hits. So DM us and let us know what you think. So we'll be back next Tuesday with our typical podcast, and then I'll see you next Thursday for another Get Lifted Thursday. Thanks for joining me for this episode of the Funk'tional Nutrition Podcast.
