  • Erin Holt [00:00:02]:

I'm Erin Holt, and this is the Funk'tional Nutrition Podcast, where we lean into intuitive functional medicine. We look at how diet, our environment, our emotions, and our beliefs all affect our physical health. This podcast is your full bodied, well rounded resource. I've got over a decade of clinical experience, and because of that, I've got a major bone to pick with diet culture, and the conventional healthcare model, they're both failing so many of us. But functional medicine isn't the panacea that it's made out to be either. We've got some work to do, and that's why creating a new model is my life's work. I believe in the ripple effect, so I founded the Funk'tional Nutrition Academy, a school in mentorship for practitioners who want to do the same.

    Erin Holt [00:00:55]:

This show is for you if you're looking for new ways of thinking about your health and you're ready to be an active participant in your own healing, you'll get things here that you won't get other places. Please keep in mind this podcast is created for educational purposes only and should never be used as a replacement for medical diagnosis or treatment. I would love for you to follow the show rate review and share, because you never know whose life you might change and, of course, keep coming back for more. Now give me the mic so I can take it away. Hello my beautiful babies and welcome to Get Lifted Thursdays. Also known as: How many hip hop references can I cram into one mini episode? So these are brand new. It's our second episode of the week and you get to ask me anything for my unfiltered hot take. Like Method Man said, when you give it to me, give it to me raw. So that's exactly what I'm going to do for you. There's no holding back in these episodes.

    Erin Holt [00:01:31]:

The intention of these little quickies are to activate you into your power. That is one of my gifts and my abilities and my strong suits and I am fully leaning into that, claiming that and owning that I definitely have the ability to activate people into their power. A couple of weeks ago I was with my Stanford group and somebody was talking about kind of like stuck in her own stuff, right? Caught up in her own way. And I was like, should I go for it? Should I say something? Should I do it? Should I do it? And I just let her rip and everybody was like sitting back, blinking and they were like, you should be a motivational speaker. It was wicked funny. But this is like pep talk turned into a pep rally, okay? That's the intention behind these little mini episodes and you can ask anything. It can be about intuitive functional medicine, health, consciousness, mindset, manifest, energy, medicine, business, health, building boundaries, relationships. It's all fair game here because health isn't just found in broccoli and biohacking.

    Erin Holt [00:02:39]:

So this is the place to come when you want to expand beyond just that. And today I'm going to address a question that came up in a client session. And the question is, what does it mean to be in our energy? So that's a phrase or term that I'll say quite often, like, be in your energy. She was actually watching the Energetics of Expansion. So that's a big part of that course. By the way, you can purchase that course anytime. It's a doozy. It's a good one.

    Erin Holt [00:03:10]:

That will activate you into your power. I've seen people go viral just by doing that program. It's been wild. Wild. So make sure you're ready. Make sure you're ready for a launch. So the answer to the question of what does it mean to be in our energy, I think this Anaïs Nin quote sums it up. "I will not adjust to the world.

    Erin Holt [00:03:33]:

I am adjusted to myself." So her full quote, and this is back in the 30s, mind you. "I disregard the proportions, the measures, the tempo of the ordinary world. I refuse to live in the ordinary world as ordinary women, to enter ordinary relationships. I want ecstasy. I am a neurotic in the sense that I live in my world. I will not adjust myself to the world. I'm adjusted to myself."

    Erin Holt [00:03:58]:

It also reminds me of a quote that I love. It's a Mos Def quote. "When y'all was asking permission, I just stepped up and took it." So I'm not seeking permission outside of myself. I'm not sitting back and waiting for permission for somebody to tell me how to live my life, how to pursue my passion, how to go for my dreams. I'm not waiting for that. While you're all sitting around waiting for permission, I just stepped up, and I took the permission. I did the damn thing.

    Erin Holt [00:04:24]:

Another quote from Jay Z, "I'm not looking at you, dudes. I'm looking past ya." Meaning, I've got my eyes on my own prize. I'm not worried about what everybody is doing around me. You want the surefire way to be unhappy, hyper fixate on what everybody else is doing. Compare yourself to everybody else. That is not the way to be in your energy. So what I think about being in my energy, I'm not reaching externally out of my power source to be told what to do.

    Erin Holt [00:05:01]:

I'm not asking anybody else on how I should live, what I should do, what program I should build in my business, what next steps I should have, what conversation I should have. None of that. It's self sourced, so I think that's another way to define it. You are in your energy when you self source answers rather than outsource answers. You can quote me on that. You being in your energy is you recognizing that you are your own highest authority. It is trusting yourself. It is being authentically you and what is authenticity? It's being the author of your own story.

    Erin Holt [00:05:44]:

It's not letting others write your story for you. You cannot access your own authenticity by reaching outside yourself. And yet, that's what so many people are trying to do. They're like, how is she being authentic? Okay, that's what I'm going to do. No, when we do this, we abandon our power. When you can abandon your power in the service of trying to fit in, right, trying to belong, trying to be accepted. You can hand over your power, when you seek permission, when you're constantly asking for opinions, when you're paying experts to tell you things about yourself that you already know to be true, when you're looking outside yourself for answers, when you actually know what you need and you want deep within. But you're disregarding those messages and you're trying to outsource the messages.

    Erin Holt [00:06:48]:

You're trying to outsource the answers. You take something that is your responsibility and you hand it over to somebody else. And by doing this, you outsource your power and you step outside your energy. Just last night my husband had Guardians of the Galaxy 3 on, the newest one, and Gamora said "what are you so afraid of in yourself? That I need to be something for you?" And I was like damn, that's a good one, that's a bar. When you have your sense of identity or safety or love or validation, reliant upon everybody else handing it over to you, giving it to you, telling you this is who you are, reflecting back to you, this is who you are. That's when you can get a little shipwrecked, little lost at sea, that's when you are absolutely not in your own energy, you're not in your power. And if you're not in your power, you might be grasping onto others to confirm or mirror or explain to you who you are. So this creates a lot of grippy or graspy or extractive energy where you are trying to plug into somebody else or something else as a power source.

    Erin Holt [00:08:25]:

Rather than using your own internal power, you are trying to extract your power from somebody or something else. And the more you do this, anytime you communicate in this way, anytime you send or communicate with somebody or reach out to somebody from that frantic energy is a moment that you're stepping outside your power. And the more you do this, the more you're constantly perpetuating the outsourcing of your power. And on top of that, it's very disempowering to you because you're missing the chance to self regulate, you're missing the chance to self source. And at the end of the day, you're never going to make progress, unless you're pulling from your own power, unless you're pulling from your own truth, unless you're pulling from your own authenticity, unless you step up and say, I will be the author of this story, I'm not looking at you dudes, I am looking past you. Your cannot find your power through extracting from others. And I say this and I want you to hear it because I've been doing this work for a very long time and there are a lot of people who come with extractive energy. How much can I take from you? And every time that used to be like a huge trigger for me.

    Erin Holt [00:09:44]:

There's like a sense of entitlement, especially in the online space and PS by the way, I'm allowed to say this stuff because this is Get Lifted Thursdays. It's raw, unfiltered, uncut. So you're not allowed to get mad about things I say on Thursdays. Tuesdays I'll keep it PG. Thursdays I let her rip. So don't tune in if you are easily offended. Okay, deal. But people roll up in my DMs all the time with this entitlement.

    Erin Holt [00:10:09]:

I feel entitled to access your time, your energy, your expertise. Because you are here, I expect to have access to you, that is extractive energy. I want to extract something from you. Like you are a resource and not a human being. It used to be such a trigger for me and now I am able to see and to witness. This is a moment that you're operating outside of your energy. This is a moment that you're operating outside of your power. Because my energetic boundaries are so strong, I am no longer worried that somebody can plug into me and take my power.

    Erin Holt [00:10:44]:

I am not available to be extracted from. I am not a resource to be extracted from. I'm a human being fully in my power, fully in my energy, fully embodying my energy. You feel the difference there, you feel the difference? So again I say you cannot find your power through extracting from others. Your find your power through building confidence in your ability to understand and to navigate things on your own. And this doesn't mean you have to be like a man on an island. You can still seek out guidance. You can still seek out help and support.

    Erin Holt [00:11:18]:

Of course, right, of course you should and you can and that's available to you. But instead the shift is that you're going to these places of support. You're going to these people of support. You're going to these spaces with material that you extracted from your own process. You are willing to sit with yourself your are willing to look at yourself head on rather than going to other people showing up in these places and spaces looking to extract from them, from their energy, from their power. And if you're like, well gosh, I don't actually know how to do that yet. That is totally okay. Because self trust is gained over time.

    Erin Holt [00:12:01]:

Every time you decide to think for yourself, every time you decide to ask yourself first before I ask somebody else, I'm going to practice checking in with me. I'm going to practice asking myself first. It's a practice. But every time you do it, it gets stronger. You build and you generate that self trust, that inner authority, that authenticity. Your intuition gets stronger every time you listen to it and every time you act on it. Your capacity to sit with yourself gets stronger every time you return to yourself. So you stop abandoning yourself in the moments that you need yourself most.

    Erin Holt [00:12:42]:

So have the courage to practice returning to yourself again and again and again and it's going to require different machinery. If you are so used to looking to the outside world and saying outside world who am I outside world please give me permission to be the person I want to be. Please give me permission to do the thing that I want to do. Outside world, please validate me. Instead you are sitting with yourself, you are practicing returning to yourself and your are self validating. You are asking yourself what do I want? What do I need, what do I desire? How can I self permit? The more you do this, the more you return to yourself, the stronger that this gets and the more you are in your energy. Every time you go within and you ask yourself these questions is a moment that you are in your own energy. My work, my work is embodying my energy, it's embodying my power, it's embodying my authenticity.

    Erin Holt [00:13:50]:

And same deal for you. Your work is to embody your energy, your power, your authenticity. Do you want to know why? It's because our energy, it is our vibration, that is our contribution to the collective. So if you want to show up and fully contribute, you got to be in your energy. And by you doing that, other people can feel that. Other people can experience that. And it feels good when you show up trying to extract your power from somebody else, that doesn't feel good, it doesn't feel good to them and it probably doesn't feel good to you. If you really sit with it, it probably doesn't feel good to you.

    Erin Holt [00:14:30]:

So that is how I describe being in your energy. There are practices that you can do to kind of cultivate calling your energy back to you and all of that. We can get into that in later shows if that's something that you're interested in. But for now hopefully that helps you identify, this is what being in my energy means.
