Episode 147: Inflammation & What You’re NOT Eating
You’ve likely heard all about foods that can cause inflammation in the body, but ever wonder if your inflammation is being caused by something you’re NOT eating? Sometimes we are so focused on the minutiae of what foods to avoid that we miss the big picture of what’s really going on - and what’s needed - within our bodies. This episode is actually a conversation Erin had with Toréa Rodriguez, FDN-P on Facebook Live, and in it they talk shop about things they’ve seen in their practice and experienced personally. They dive into challenges with elimination diets, navigating social situations while on a diet for your health, how the absence of certain foods can invite an inflammatory response in your gut microbiome, plus strategies to try if you know you’ve got inflammation. You’ll definitely want to listen in if you’re a practitioner, someone interested in nutrition or going through your own health struggles.

Episode 146: Intuitive Fasting - An Opinion Piece on Our Wellness Culture
There’s a growing trend in Wellness Culture where opinions and recommendations are increasingly standardized, leaving little room for nuance or exception. Today Erin gives us a peek into how her mind operates in this opinion episode on our wellness and diet culture, and it’s centered on a recently released intuitive eating nutrition book that has a large portion of the wellness world falling into two camps: FOR or ANTI.
Unfortunately this leaves a lot of folks who are simply searching for some help to think they have to “choose a side” when it comes to their health. Who’s to blame for this polarization and distortion? Where has our compassion gone? In this episode, you won’t hear Erin take a hard stand for or against this topic, or even defend her own position. Instead she asks questions about our collective reactivity - in the nutrition space and beyond - and attempts to understand what that means about us. How can we utilize that reactivity to affect the change we’re looking for? This one is certainly food for thought...

Episode 145: EMDR, Mental Health & Starting at the Roots
At some point in our adult lives, most of us have experienced a situation where we felt our emotional response was stronger than we anticipated. Ever wonder why that happened? In today’s episode, Erin sits down with Carli Genet, MSW, LICSW to unpack the concept of mental health healing by starting at the roots. If you’ve been here a minute, then you already know that the key to optimal health extends far beyond just diet and exercise. Erin and Carli discuss EMDR therapy, how and where memories are stored, big and small traumatic experiences, attachment styles and why tracing back to the roots for healing is often considered the emotional equivalent to functional nutrition work. If you’ve ever had an experience that triggers a stronger reaction than you thought it should, or notice certain situations seem to cause a stress response that you can’t easily shake off, then this is definitely an episode to tune into.

Episode 144: Considerations for a Low FODMAP Diet
A low FODMAP diet has become the sweetheart of diets in treating SIBO within the functional medicine and even conventional medicine world. However, as with any protocol implementation, one must be sure to ask, “what’s the end game here?” In this episode, Erin answers listener questions and takes a deep dive into the low FODMAP diet, what it is, how it helps to reduce symptoms of SIBO & IBS and why she very rarely implements it with her clients. Erin clears the confusion and helps lay out how to determine if it’s right for you, as well as potential drawbacks to the diet. This episode is great for anyone who is suffering from SIBO symptoms, IBS, or are otherwise curious about transitioning onto or off of a low FODMAP diet. Share with anyone who may find this beneficial!

Episode 143: Nutrigenomics with Dr. Yael Joffe
Our genes influence not just the color of our eyes or our height, but also how we respond to things in our world: how we respond to the food we eat, the exercise we do, how we process trauma and stress. Understanding your genetics can equate to better self-knowledge because understanding your own blueprint gives you insight about who you are - and how you exist in the world.
On this episode of the Funk’tional Nutrition Podcast, Erin sits down for a fascinating conversation with Yael Joffe, PhD, RD, FACN and dives deep into the facets of nutrigenomics, genetic testing, epigenetics and how we can apply this data to not only understand ourselves better, but also how to apply this information to better our health. Whether you’re looking for insight into an autoimmune condition, weight loss or to gain a more complete understanding of your own gene expression, nutrigenomics is an increasingly viable option for those looking to optimize their health.

Episode 142: Gluten Sensitivity & Celiac Disease
Inspired by many listener questions, this episode gets into the nitty gritty between gluten sensitivity and celiac disease. WTF is the difference? Is there one? Listen in as Erin unpacks these questions, plus the best ways to test for it and how to determine if you should go gluten-free. You won’t be wondering if you “just” have a gluten sensitivity after this episode!

Episode 141: The Lowdown on the NutriSense Continuous Glucose Monitor
I’ve been experimenting with NutriSense’s Continuous Glucose Monitor, and in this episode, I sat down with NutriSense Cofounder and Director of Nutrition, Kara Collier, RDN to get into the nitty gritty about what exactly is a CGM, the tech behind it and why someone would use it. Listen in to hear the breakdown on who this CGM is good for, who it’s NOT good for, and how it can be a beneficial step to help some who are looking to take their established health behaviors to the next level.

Episode 140: Somatic Healing & Breathwork with Victoria Albina
If you live with an autoimmune condition, you are probably familiar with how a stressful event can quickly create an uptick in your symptoms. And with many stressful events over the last year, it seems everyone is operating from a heightened, vigilant state. The connection between our mind and our gut is often a topic on this podcast, but this episode gets more into how our lived experiences affect this connection over time. In this episode, Erin sits down with Victoria Albina to discuss how traumatic experiences have a downstream effect on our bodily systems, why this occurs and what you can do to come down from this heightened state and heal.

Episode 139: Strictly Biz - When People Want to Pick Your Brain
Today Erin picks up the conversation from Episode 124 and continues the discussion on the ways entitlement in business often arises, especially surrounding the seemingly innocuous question of whether to allow someone to pick your brain. If you’ve ever been asked for coffee (or have done the asking) with the question, “Can I pick your brain?” this episode is for you! This is part two of a three-part Strictly Biz series all about entitlement in business.

Episode 138: How Hormones Influence the Gut
The connection between your gut and hormones is intricate, and having a better understanding of it can make a big difference in your overall health. In this episode, Erin unpacks this tricky connection and answers questions surrounding not only which issue to address first, but also why. If you’re looking to make sustainable changes that have a long-term impact, this episode is definitely for you! Have a listen and share this episode with someone who suffers from GI and hormonal issues.

Episode 137: Is Perfectionism Driving Your Hormone Imbalance? Cortisol, DHEA & Adrenal Testing
Hormone imbalance has cascading effects all throughout our body, so understanding the root cause is essential for addressing this issue. In this episode, Erin breaks down the symptoms of adrenal fatigue and answers questions relating to how your stress response works, how it can get wonky and how to determine whether this is a problem for you. This is PART 1 of a deeper dive into adrenals, HPA axis, cortisol, DHEA, and adrenal function testing and what different results may mean for you.

Episode 136: Cholesterol: Friend or Foe? Everything You Wanted to Know
Unpacking all your cholesterol questions in this episode, and as always, answering this is not as straightforward as “cholesterol is bad/good.” I discuss whether cholesterol is a problem, what it does in the body, problems with low cholesterol, underlying reasons for high cholesterol, how your hormones are related and how to support healthy cholesterol levels.

Episode 135: Intermittent Fasting - Who it's For, Who it's Not For
Can intermittent fasting be a therapeutic tool? Rich with content and resources, this episode is an extensive, deep dive into intermittent fasting, metabolic dysfunction and how you can assess whether IF is right for you based on your unique context.
This episode is perfect for anyone who is fasting-curious, anyone who’s interested in IF or currently trying IF. I dissect who should try it, in what situations is it therapeutic and why, potential benefits, contraindications, whether it works for women’s bodies and the debate over if it’s just another diet culture tool. Have a listen and be sure to share this episode with anyone in your life who has type II diabetes, high insulin, prediabetes, insulin-resistance, metabolic resistance, high blood sugar, anyone going through menopause, or post-menopause.

Episode 134: Why You Need to Stop Self-treating Your Gut
Just because something is natural doesn’t mean it can’t harm you. Herbs have the capacity to negatively alter our gut microbiome, so it’s important to know exactly what your needs are before diving into herbal remedies for gut problems. In this episode I take a deep dive into problems with antibiotics and herbal remedies, why the 5R protocol needs a revamp, when it’s time to explore functional lab testing and how to safely treat your gut at home. This episode is teeming with some piping hot early 2020 energy!
